Sexton starts EliteXC career in style

Rosi Sexton made a successful debut in the EliteXC organisation when she beat Debi Purcell at Friday night’s ShoXC event.

Sexton – now 9-1 – was given a split decision victory over Purcell after what was a very close fight.

But it was Sexton that was the more aggressive of the pair and generally imposed her gameplan on Purcell, even finding an opportunity for a flashy cartwheel guard pass attempt.

Her repeated superman punches also caught the eye of both the spectators and the judges, with two giving her the fight by 30-27 and only one scoring it in Purcell’s favour, 29-28.

Sexton, who is based at the UK’s Straight Blast Gym, has signed a three-fight deal with EliteXC, home to the one opponent who has beaten her - Gina Carano.

However, Sexton competes at 130lbs and a rematch at that weight would likely prove difficult for Carano, who has failed to make weight for several fights in the past.

Friday’s event also saw the return to action of Pride FC veteran Cyrille Diabate, who took on Jaimie Fletcher.

The Frenchman stuffed Fletcher’s takedown attempts repeatedly and offered some nice ground and pound when the fight did reach the floor.

In fact, the fight was pretty much all Diabate, as he dominated all the standing phases and much of the groundwork, barring a guillotine attempt from Fletcher late in the fight.

He won a unanimous judges’ decision, with all three scoring it 30-27 in his favour.

Jared Hamman found that revenge tastes sweet when he stopped Poai Suganuma, who had knocked him out just four months earlier with a flying knee only fifteen seconds after the opening bell.

Suganuma seemed to be looking for the early finish again as he came out banging, but it was Hamman who managed to land the first clean blow.

He rocked the Hawaiian and used the ensuing takedown attempt to deliver some strikes from the top, which finished the fight for him.

And UFC veteran Sam Morgan had a bad night, being slammed, mounted and choked by Fabricio Camoes just 45 seconds into the first round of their lightweight clash.
