Dana White responds to news of Diaz's positive test
February 10th 2012

With today’s news that Nick Diaz tested positive for marijuana in the UFC 143 drug tests, any hope of a rematch with Carlos Condit is now almost certainly dead.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission confirmed the positive test to Fighters Only earlier, but the amount of marijuana in Diaz’s sample (in milligram measurements) was not revealed.

Diaz tested positive once before for marijuana use when fighting under the auspices of NSAC; in 2007 he was suspended for six months after failing a test administered for his Pride FC fight with Takanori Gomi.

This time he is likely to receive a longer penalty and that will put paid both to a rematch with Condit and any hope of staging Diaz vs. Georges St. Pierre this year.

“I am beyond disappointed that he tested positive for marijuana. It is now in the hands of the Nevada State Athletic Commission,” UFC president Dana White said in an email sent to Fighters Only this evening.

NSAC has referred Diaz to the state attorney general’s office for sanction to be processed. Diaz may appeal and/or ask for his B-sample to be tested, or he may simply throw his hands up and admit fault.

Either way, he will be in limbo for some time and the fight world will move on without him. Carlos Condit will now be biding his time until St. Pierre returns from injury late 2012.
