Jon Jones was arrested yesterday on a charge of driving while under the influence of alcohol.
The arrest followed Jones crashing his Bentley Continental into a telephone pole in the early hours of the morning.
Police in Broome County, New York confirmed that Jones was arrested shortly after 5am. They have also confirmed that there were no other vehicles involved in the accident.
Jones was released from custody after several hours but has not offered any public comment on the arrest - nor will he, according to his manager, who is asking media to “respect his privacy.
It is not known if Jones was breathalysed or otherwise tested by the arresting officers, but he is presently only bail - paid by his mother - and will soon hear whether police intend to pursue a charge of Driving While Under the Influence (DWI).
It is a significant setback for Jones, who has made much of his squeaky-clean image as a marketing tool. The irony of the situation is that Jones had only a month ago predicted that he would never do “something crazy” like get arrested for a charge of DWI.
Jones made the comment as he discussed the UFC taking the unprecedented step of sponsoring its own fighter for his fight against Rashad Evans. “I’m glad the UFC wanted to work with me as well, and I think that they trust that I’ll never make them look bad. You never have to worry about me with a DWI or doing something crazy,” he said.
