UFC welterweight champion Georges St Pierre says he’s fine with being known as a sex symbol. The French-Canadian fighting superstar is well known to be popular with female fans as well as being one of the UFC’s longest reigning champions.
When asked if the thought of being a sex symbol made him uncomfortable, 22-2 St Pierre told Fighters Only he just tries to be authentic. “I am who I am, you know? And some people like it but there are a lot of people who don’t like it.”
St Pierre, who is currently recovering from a knee injury, said he wasn’t sure if he’d classify himself as a sex symbol but has no issue with it.
“In terms of being a sex symbol or something, I don’t know about that. I think I still have a lot to be in order to be a sex symbol. But if people have of that image me it’s fine, I’ll take it (laughs). There are a lot of athletes who are called sex symbols and they do very well, so. David Beckham is one of them. To be compared to a guy like him it makes me… I’m very happy, you know?”
St Pierre spoke to Fighters Only during a media day for upcoming video game Sleeping Dogs, on which he acted as a consultant. ‘Rush’ helped the designers with various moves performed in the open-world game, where players take the role of undercover Hong Kong cop Wei Shen as he attempts to infiltrate the Triads, a Chinese criminal organization.
The game – available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in August – promises to allow players to engage enemies in martial arts combat, street races and shootouts.
St Pierre said: “In the game, the character is able to take some of my gear. When he does so, when he wears one of my T-shirts or one of my bandanas he’s able to do, when he fights, some of my signature moves. So my job was to work with the guys to make sure the game was authentic to me with the signature moves, and make sure the moves that have been done were realistic.”
Rush confirmed that players will be able to perform attacks such as his trademark superman punch in the game. “The flying punch, the combos – the way the combos were made, if I liked that kind of combo better than the other one. And also some of the throws, like the harai goshi, some of the throws that the character uses are stuff that I do.”
