Yesterday’s announcement that the winner of Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua vs. Brandon Vera will get a title shot left a lot of people confused.
Light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones was one of them.
Not longer after UFC president Dana White told flummoxed conference call listeners about the title shot arrangement, Jones posted his reaction on Twitter.
Jones is defending the belt at UFC 151 against Dan Henderson, which will be his fourth title defence and his fifth fight in the UFC with the light-heavyweight title on the line.
He is on a seven-fight win streak and even the loss is not counted as a real loss by most fans, coming as it did by way of disqualification for an illegal elbow on Matt Hamill right as he was about to put him away.
Henderson is on a four-fight win streak with wins over Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua - the UFC’s ‘Fight of the Year’ for 2011 - and Fedor Emelianenko in his last two outings.
By contrast Shogun is 2-2 in his last four outings and 4-4 in the UFC overall. His last fight was the loss to Henderson, preceded by a win over Forrest Griffin, preceded in turn by his losing the title to Jon Jones in March last year.
Vera’s recent record is even more patchy. He is 1-2 with one No Contest in his last four outings and had actually been cut from the UFC last year before being brought back in when his loss to Thiago Silva was overturned to a No Contest because the Brazilian tried cheating a drug test.
