Jon Jones has been signed by Nike.
The UFC light-heavyweight champion has a multi-year exclusive global deal, making him the first MMA fighter to earn such a prestigious sponsorship. Anderson Silva has a Nike deal but that is with Nike Brasil only and is not on the global scale that Jones’ deal is on.
Jones confirmed the deal via Twitter moments after Fighters Only had confirmed it with his manager Malki Kawa.
The deal is multi-year and will include a signature line of products, although it is not clear at this stage if that will include apparel and equipment or just equipment, such as gloves and shin guards. Visible sponsorship will commence with UFC 151 when Jones defends the light-heavyweight belt against Dan Henderson.
The monetary value of the deal has not been made known but regardless, it is in already the biggest sponsorship in the history of the sport. The profile and credibility that a Nike sponsorship brings to an athlete is unmatched.
Jones is the youngest champion in UFC history and has successfully defended the belt three times. Henderson, former Strikeforce and Pride FC champion, will be his fourth challenger. If he beats Henderson, he will rematch Lyoto Machida, who he guillotined into unconsciousness earlier this year.
