BJ Penn and Rory MacDonald will fight on the UFC on FOX 5 card.
Fighters Only reported the switch last week and it was confirmed by the UFC to USA Today yesterday. The move follows MacDonald having to pull out of UFC 152 because of a cut sustained in sparring.
MacDonald was cut over the right eye. His trainer Firas Zahabi revealed exclusively to Fighters Only that the cut was caused by a spinning back fist as he moved in on a sparring partner.
Zahabi says the cut required 38 stitches and, being where it is, precluded his fighter taking part in the UFC 152 event. Penn wanted the fight moved to UFC 153 but MacDonald’s camp were holding out for UFC 154 - which coincidentally takes place in their home city of Montreal.
There was probably more than a little gamesmanship involved in the effort to get the fight moved to Montreal. In the end it has been moved to a neutral territory and time which doesn’t provide an advantage to either man, bar the opportunity for MacDonald’s cut to have long finished the scarification process.
