Lyoto Machida’s next opponent is likely to be Dan Henderson.
UFC president Dana White revealed the likely match-up to Fighters Only today when asked where Machida lies in the division.
Machida had been declared the number one contender after a win over Ryan Bader at UFC on FOX 4. But when the UFC was looking for someone to face Jon Jones after Dan Henderson pulled out of UFC 151 with an injury, Machida turned the opportunity down.
That cost him his number one spot, according to White, and now he finds himself in a play-off position with a fellow contender. “We will see what happens. Machida will probably fight Dan. Still working it all out, I don’t know, we will see what happens,” White said.
“[Sonnen] was the one who stepped up to the plate. All the other guys that were number one, if you go right down the pecking order and they were all like hell no. then I see a thing today where Machida is like, ‘I want to fight GSP’ - where the f--k did that come from?
“GSP and Anderson makes all the sense in the world. Him and Machida makes no sense whatsoever. doesn’t that kinda tell you something? Everybody was looking for that number one contender spot and now nobody wants to be the number one contender in the light-heavyweight division? That’s pretty interesting.”
