Gunnar Nelson is 24 years old and already an accomplished black belt with a big reputation in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu world, thanks in no small part to his win over Jeff Monson in an open weight match at the 2009 ADCC grappling championships.
He has been on the UFC radar for some time but has only now accepted an invitation to join the organisation’s welterweight ranks. Nelson was originally slated to meet Pascal Kraus on this weekend’s UFC on FUEL 5 card, but the German got injured.
American Top Team fighter Rich Attonito then agreed to step in, only to pull out a day later when he decided he wouldn’t be able to make the weight cut. That led to DaMarques Johnson stepping up on just over a week’s notice, making for three opponents in as many days for Nelson.
A somewhat enigmatic figure with a legendarily unruffled demeanour, Nelson has piqued a lot of interest in fight fans. Find out what makes him tick…
