DaMarques Johnson missed weight for his fight with Gunnar Nelson by seven pounds at today’s official UFC on FUEL TV 5 weigh-ins, which took place at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, England.
Johnson hit the scales at 183lbs for a 175lb catch weight bout. Deducting the one-pound excess allowance for non-title fights, that makes his miss a rather whopping seven pounds. However, it must be borne in mind that Johnson took the fight on a week’s notice and was 210lbs when he took it.
Nelson was originally set to face Pascal Krass but when the German welterweight got injured, Rich Attonito stepped in. A day later he dropped out, deciding he couldn’t make weight, and DaMarques Johnson happened to be standing in the same backstage area as UFC matchmaker Joe Silva when he got the news.
Johnson was asked to step in and as he told Fighters Only two days ago, agreed “without fully thinking it through first.” As a result he has spent the week having a hellacious weight cut and wishing he had kept his mouth shut. He now loses 20 per cent of his purse to Nelson and, being 0-2 in his last 2, will surely lose his position on the roster if he loses the fight.
All the other fighters made weight on the first attempt with no issues.
