When Chris Zorba and John Ferguson, two of Europe’s top promoters, announced their Prizefighter-style 155lbs tournament, there was much speculation amongst UK MMA fans as to who would be invited to take part.
The pair promised a heavy lightweight line-up and they have delivered. Today UFC and BAMMA veteran Andre Winner was made the eighth and final entrant, completing a line-up which also features two former TUF competitors and five more top-ranked lightweights.
Winner, 14-7-1 and hailing from Nottingham, enters the tournament as the favourite. But anything can happen in MMA and any of the other participants in the tournament have the opportunity to break out here. Winning this tournament will be a huge achievement for whoever is successful.
The full line-up is as follows:
Andre Winner 14-7-1
Tim Radcliffe 12-4-0
Jason Ball 18-11-0
Martin Stapleton 9-1-0
Tim Newman 8-3-0
Chris Hoban 9-4-0
Mark Glover 6-1-1
Tommy Maguire 12-4-0
Cage Contender Fightstars will be held on December 1st at the prestigious Liverpool Olympia, England which is also a regular home to Eddie Hearn's successful ‘Prizefighter’ pro-boxing version of the tournament.
Promoter and matchmaker Chris Zorba is excited, "I am really happy with the line up and this could be one of the greatest nights in UK MMA history. All eight guys are laying it on the line and the winner will really catapult himself to the top.”
Co-promoter and Cage Contender owner John Ferguson adds, "What a line up! Chris has really pulled it out of the bag on this event. This is fantasy matchmaking, it's about putting bums on seats and any MMA fan who misses this event needs their heads looked at.
“We are over the moon with the line up and our broadcast partners are making all the right noises too. Cage Contender Fight Stars is going to be special make no mistake.”
The draw is to be made at 16:00hrs on Saturday 3rd November from the Liverpool Olympia and will be streamed online. The event also boasts a strong undercard of supporting bouts from rising stars, several of whom are likely to be big names in the future.
