Eddie Alvarez: 'Bellator are suing me'
Eddie Alvarez claims that Bellator FC has not in fact matched the deal he was offered by the UFC, and that a legal dispute is in the offing.
“It's up to the court now, man. I'm being sued. it's going up before a judge. I think it will become very clear… It wasn't a Hector Lombard deal, but it was a good deal. And I consider it a much better deal than what Bellator's offering,” he said on The MMA Hour today.
The UFC is targeting Alvarez, the former Bellator lightweight champion. His fight contract has expired, except for a ‘match clause’ which allows Bellator to match any offer made to him by rival promotions in the 12 months following the expiry of the contract.
Alvarez appeared on The MMA Hour today to talk about his situation, which is threatening to pull the gloves off in the simmering rivalry between Bellator and the UFC. Whilst the UFC dwarfs Bellator in every scale, Bellator is now a Spike TV property and is expected to make big gains this year, Spike being the former home of the UFC.
“Everyone has heard that Bellator has match [clause] and whatnot… We went to settlement a couple days ago. We had a settlement meeting where everything was supposed to get worked out. I was sued maybe 30 minutes after that. There's a lot of tension in the air,” Alvarez said today.
“We don't believe it was matched at all. I wanted to give details but I can't because we're in the middle of a pending lawsuit.”
However, Alvarez did try and give some flavor of his position by employing a food-based allegory.
“If I want to go to dinner with one guy and another guy asked me to dinner, if the intention of one guy is to take me to a fine dining restaurant and the other guy wants to take me to McDonald's, guy number two just thinks dinner's dinner,” he philosophized.
“They're going to the media and saying they matched the offer, but in our opinion they didn't match at all. The terms are not the same. If this goes in front of anyone in court, they're going to see that this is not a match. The truth is this is disappointing. I gave a lot to Bellator and I don't get much back in return.
“If it was a match I'd be more than happy to honor the contract. I would have no problem going to fight for Bellator… The issues has to do with being fair. The contract says at the end ‘We [Bellator] get to match this contract.’ I said yes to that four years ago. In our eyes [their latest offer] is not a match. The difference is a lot of money.
“[At the settlement meeting] We tried to make an offer to make it fair. We offered a number, it was less than the projected UFC offer [but higher than what Bellator wanted to pay me]. The conversation was over in less than a minute, it was like ‘no way’. It wasn't a half hour after that that I had a lawsuit [on my hands].”
Fighters Only has contacted Bellator FC for a response to Alvarez’s comments.
