Swanson and Poirier begin where they left off in the first round, starting at an incredible pace, both men landing various shots. Poirier continues to search for the takedown, but Swanson manages to keep the fight standing, which is essentially where he seems most comfortable. Swanson lands a big body shot and a head kick, but Poirier is able to turn it around and land a nice takedown. Swanson traps Poirierâ€™s right arm and has a shot at an omoplata submission, but instead stays in the position to land strikes to Poirierâ€™s head. Both men end the fight swinging.

Poirier takes Swanson to the cage by turning the pressure up and landing a number of hooks and crosses. It looks as if Swanson has no answer for the Poirierâ€™s strikes until Swanson gets his first takedown of the night, eventually transitioning into back control where he was look for the rear naked choke finish. Swanson is high up on top of Poirierâ€™s back and is still unable to get the finish, even transitioning to an armbar.
