Mason Jones becomes a dual-weight Cage Warriors champ, finishes Adam Proctor in the first round

Mason Jones capped off a memorable three-night stint of Cage Warriors events by becoming the third-ever Cage Warriors two-weight champion.

The Welshman’s fight with Adam Proctor may have lasted less than a round, but that four minutes-plus was filled with so much action that it could have been spread among five rounds and their bout would still be called an entertaining fight.

Proctor was the much larger man and that seemed to initially trouble Jones as he was thudded by a jab every time he tried to close the distance.

Undeterred by the size discrepancy, Jones was willing to take one to give one as he threw punches in the pocket. That paid off when “The Dragon” dropped Proctor with a stiff left hand.

Jones poured on the punishment to try and force a stoppage on the ground, but “The Love Doctor” recovered well and got back to his feet to secure a takedown and appear to reverse fortunes in this fight.

Proctor managed to control Jones in the clinch for a while, but they soon broke away and Jones looked the much more confident man in his striking following his earlier successes.

With around a minute of the contest’s opening round remaining, Jones floored Proctor for a second time with a brutal left hook.

Follow-up ground and pound forced referee Marc Goddard to call a stop to this contest and award Jones the win.

Jones added Cage Warriors welterweight gold to his collection, joining his lightweight belt, and could see himself get the UFC call in the very near future.

Paul Hughes stays unbeaten and earns third-round stoppage against Aidan Stephen

Paul Hughes showed why he is being considered one of Ireland’s top MMA prospects by displaying his well-rounded arsenal en route to a third-round stoppage against Scotland’s Aidan Stephen.

The Cage Warriors 116 co-main event was a closely-contested fight in the first round, but the tide turned in the Irishman’s favour from the second round onwards.

Hughes appeared to have the striking edge over Stephen, notably putting together some nice punching combinations and beating the body of his foe in the second round. Stephen tried to bring the fight down to the floor, but Hughes’ wrestling defence more than held up for him.

The fight continued in a similar vein in the third and final round as Hughes outboxed Stephen, before the unbeaten prospect switched things up to land some takedowns of his own.

Hughes went to work on the ground, taking Stephen’s back and snatching a rear-naked choke to earn the sixth stoppage victory of his 6-0 professional MMA career.
