Despite starting his MMA career off with a loss, UFC welterweight CM Punk plans on fighting for the promotion once again.
Following his highly publicised endeavour into mixed martial arts, things didn’t go according to plan for Punk, real name Phil Brooks, who fell to a first round rear naked choke submission at the hands of fellow pro novice Mickey Gall at UFC 203 in September.
Speaking in an interview on The MMA Hour, Punk said that if Dana White was done with him he would’ve cut him following his loss in Cleveland. After a recent conversation with the UFC president he’s confident he’ll get at least one more shot in sport’s leading promotion.
“I don’t want to speak for him, but I think if he wants to kill it, he would have killed it right then,” Punk revealed. “Until anything is official, I don’t want to say either way what he’s thinking or what he’s thinking. But yeah, I’m pretty confident that it’ll be in the UFC.
“I told him I want to fight again. We’re back at it. We’re back to the drawing board. So, it’s up to him. He floated me an idea and we’re kind of going back and forth on it right now.”
After the loss to Gall, Punk wasted no time in getting back in the gym to continue the journey and improve his MMA game.
“I felt like I was in the best shape of my life still, so I just kept after it,” he said. “That’s the best thing you can do after you lose. The UFC just made me a business offer. I wasn’t emotional, because I saw that something was over. I was just bummed that I lost.”
Whilst quietly confident of making another walk to the Octagon, if the promotion refuses to offer him another fight that’s not going to deter the former professional wrestler from competing in MMA again, even if it’s outside of the UFC.
“This is what I do now,” Punk added. “This is what I’m going to do now. If I can do it for you, awesome. If not, I’ll still bug you for tickets to your show.”
