With UFC 203 firmly in the books, Stipe Miocic successfully defended his UFC heavyweight championship with a first round knockout victory over Alistair Overeem. While that performance ended the night of fights it was an event that had it’s fair share of interesting stories emerging from the rest of the main card. Here’s the best of the rest.

Fabricio Werdum defeated Travis Browne via unanimous decision but it was marred with controversial moments including referee Gary Copeland granting Browne a bizarre timeout to tend to what later was revealed to be a broken finger to a post fight altercation between Werdum and Browne’s coach Edmond Tarverdyan.

On the timeout called in the first round:

“The referee’s there to keep the fight going or stop the fight,” said Werdum. “The referee stopped the fight, and that’s it. But he didn’t stop the fight. The referee didn’t say anything; why didn’t he stop the fight? That’s not my job. I just did my job. And I just give one punch. But I saw because he turned his body, I stopped. And when the referee stopped, I stopped. But I saw his bone; he broke his finger. I don’t understand why the athletic commission didn’t stop the fight.”

On the altercation with Tarverdyan:

“I don’t know his name, but he said, ‘Hey, shut your mouth, son of a (expletive),’ said Werdum. “I said, ‘What?’ He said, ‘Motherf*cker, shut your mouth, motherf*cker.’ I didn’t do the (full) kick. I just kept the distance. I know he’s a boxing coach, and I saw in his eyes he wanted to punch my face. I just kept the distance. So that’s it. But he came (forward) first; he said a lot of bad things. My mom said never say bad things to nobody. But he started.”

CM Punk’s near two year journey to making his mixed martial arts debut in the UFC ended with a first round submission loss as 22 year old prospect Mickey Gall took the former pro wrestler down from the opening exchange and dominated him until he got the rear naked choke. For Punk, his MMA journey continues but he’s unsure if that will be the in the UFC.

“I don’t know what happens from here on out; what if I get cut?” said Punk. “I think that’s a possibility? Do I want that to happen? No. But who’s to say where I go from here? I definitely want to keep going, I just fell off a bike. I’m not going to shelve it and leave it in the middle of the street. I’ve got to get back on to ride. I lost, and it sucks, and it was lopsided, and it’s upsetting. But I know I’m better than that.”

Meanwhile winner Gall is looking to capitalise on this high profile fight and is already looking ahead eyeing a clash with fellow ‘Looking for a Fight’ discovered fighter in Sage Northcutt at UFC 205 in New York.

“I hope they give me Sage,” Gall said. “I think everyone wants to see that fight.”

Dana White weighed in during a post fight interview with Megan Olivi.

“When he called him out, Sage’s people texted me immediately,” said White. “They want the fight. So we’ll see if that fight happens.”

With a marquee win over Joanne Calderwood, Jessica Andrade is eyeing a title fight in the near future. “If the UFC feels like it’s time for me to fight for the belt, I will,” said Andrade. “I’m sure I match up very well against Joanna Jedrzejczyk, it will be a great fight and, who knows, a great Performance of the Night.”

Now 2-0 since dropping down to strawweight, Andrade is starting to find her groove in her new weight class.

“I’ve been doing very well in my new division,” said Andrade. “I’ve been getting the weight down very well, very easily – unlike many girls in the division. I’m always ready for whatever comes.

Urijah Faber is at a crossroads in his MMA career. Following his title fight loss to Dominick Cruz at UFC 199 earlier this year he made a quick return to the Octagon but came up short against rising star Jimmie Rivera who took the unanimous decision. What the future holds now for the ‘California Kid’ is uncertain.

“I don’t know (what’s next),” Faber told UFC.com. “I’m going to go back and relax. This week I came and I was doing my water load and I cut 21 pounds since Tuesday, so that was kind of rough. I’m going to take some time and think about things and watch the fight and see what happens after that. I’ve got no plans.”
